664. Byzantine lead seal of Batseantos Liparites
(ca 12th cent.)
A beautiful rare seal!
Obverse: Inscription in 4 lines between cross and decorative patterns, +ΚΕRΘ/ΤΩCΩ/ΔΟVΛ/Ω = Κύριε, βοήθει τῷ σῷ δούλῳ (Lord, help your servant), dotted border.
Reverse: Inscription in 4 lines between decorations, RΑΤC/ΕΑΝΤΩ/ΛΗΠΑΡ/ΙΤΗΝ = Βατσεάντῳ Λιπαρίτην (Batseantos Liparites), dotted border.
Seemingly an unpublished seal with a beautiful patina! The main name of the owner (Batseantos) is surely rarest and non-greek. As for the surname, it possibly refers to his origin, the island Lipara of Sicily.
