1794 Liberty Cap Cent. S-54. Rarity-3. Head of 1794. AU-53 BN (NGC).
Attractive deep copper-brown with intermingled blushes of lighter rose-brown and a hint of olive. Sharper detail is noted for the obverse, the reverse soft along the right border, but with the words OF AMERICA still legible. The texture is frosty, surfaces appearing smooth in hand apart from a minor rim bruise at 5:30 on the obverse. Closer inspection reveals only trivial pitting and mostly wispy handling marks, although there are two faint pin scratches slanting up to right through the right-central reverse. Certainly among the top two dozen or so certified specimens of this variety, a die pair from which no examples are known to have survived in Mint State. An opportunity for a specialist in the varieties of this most desirable date to upgrade his or her specimen, or an ideal example for a date or type set. Breen Die State III, with heavy clash marks on obverse and reverse.
PCGS# 1365. NGC ID: 223M.
