1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 27-S, W-5055. Rarity-5-. Small Planchet, Plain Shield. VF-25 (PCGS).
143.6 grains. Predominately light brown with contrasting dark olive toning around the periphery. A well balanced and attractive specimen of a variety whose absolute rarity may not be great, but seriously challenges collectors who focus on color and surface. This piece is smooth and glossy, with some trivial obverse hairlines and two little nicks under the plowhandles, but no other significant flaws to note. A curved mint clip is seen over SAR of CAESAREA. The centering allows for a frame of denticles atop the obverse and a nice complete date. The devices are sharp and complete. Die State 2, with a crack between NO of NOVA and a bulge in the left obverse field. The first EPU Maris 27-S was a remarkable AU-50 (PCGS) that brought $12,000 in November 2019. The six coins in the SHI census range from VF+ (two) to a single AU. The Syd Martin coin, graded VF-25 (PCGS) like this one but softer at the centers due to its die state, brought $6,600 last summer.
