1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 27-j, W-5060. Rarity-6+. Small Planchet, Plain Shield. Fine Details--Environmental Damage (PCGS).
132.8 grains. A rare variety, one unknown to Maris and apparently not identified until the 1890 Parmelee sale. This piece is dark brown with some lighter brown contrast on the devices. The surfaces have suffered from ground exposure, leaving the fields microscopically granular at best but also showing some scattered raised corrosion. The detail is better on the reverse than obverse, but both sides are reasonably attractive, all things considered. The centering is good and the date is complete. The 2019 EPU coin was also in a PCGS Fine Details holder, by virtue of a couple of old dents. Syd Martin had the Parmelee discovery coin, a PCGS F-12 that brought $8,400. There are only five coins in the SHI census graded better than F+. Most of the just over a dozen survivors are not exactly beauty pageant winners.
PCGS# 767895.
