1787 Fugio Copper. Pointed Rays. Newman 11-X, W-6790. Rarity-4. STATES UNITED, 4 Cinquefoils. MS-64 BN (NGC).
A lovely Mint State Fugio with boldly lustrous, unmarked surfaces and pleasing medium brown toning with steel highlights and flashes of mint red in the fields. Nicely struck on a relatively high quality planchet that shows minor flakiness at the lower obverse and a streak across the upper reverse while the vast majority of the metal is remarkably hard and smooth. The centering is just about perfect and the design definition quite satisfying throughout. Newman 11-X is an overall scarce variety yet reasonably available in high grade thanks to its presence in the Bank of New York Hoard. This is an outstandingly choice specimen and a delight to behold.
