M. TIDD / 558 / WOBURN on the obverse and 558 six times on an 1820s Matron Head large cent. Brunk T-277 var., Rulau-Mass-565 var. Host coin Good.
Marshall Tidd (1820-1904) was a gunsmith and machinist working on Ward Street in Woburn, MA making pistols and rifles. He was active from about 1845 to 1890. The 558 more than likely either pertains to a serial number for a gun, or an address. Either way it is unique. This is the same stamp that he used to mark the guns he made.
