Counterstamps
M. TIDD / WOBURN / MASS on an 1820 Matron Head large cent. Brunk T-279, Rulau- Mass-570. Host coin Very Fine.
Well struck on a smooth brown coin, this is most likely the finest known example of this counterstamp. Marshall Tidd (1820-1904) was a gunsmith and machinist working on Ward Street in Woburn, MA making pistols and rifles. He was active from about 1845 to 1890. This is the same stamp that he used to mark the guns he made. Brunk lists eight different dated examples, but not of this date.
