A.J. SUTHERLAND / ANN ARBOR on an 1832 Matron Head large cent. Brunk S-1129, Rulau-Mich 100A. Host coin Very Good, but holed.
Andrew Jackson Sutherland (1824-1891) was a gunsmith working in Ann Arbor, MI, located on the South side of the public square. He was active in the 1860s to 1880s. At some point he also became a dealer in patent rights according to his death certificate. Only two examples are reported in Brunk and Rulau, with one being an 1854 large cent, making this a new example. A very rare gunsmith stamp!
From the Steve M. Tompkins Collection. Purchased at a coin shop in Branson, MO.
