J. SPOFFORD / PORTLAND on an 1851 Braided Hair large cent. Brunk S-773, Rulau-ME 122 var. Host coin Very Fine.
Josiah H. Spofford (1811-1868) was operating in Portland, ME from 1846 to 1860 as a machinist (1850), die sinker (1855) and gunsmith (1856). Brunk lists only one 1851 large cent reported, this exact example.
