B (in a box punch) / G&H / (EAGLE) 18 (in a box punch) on an 1831 Matron Head large cent. Brunk-Unlisted, Rulau-Unlisted. Host coin Very Good.
These are the hallmarks of a silversmith or goldsmith. The eagle standing on the number 18 signifies 18 kt. G & H could possibly be for GALE & HAYDEN, New York City silversmiths William Gale and Nathaniel Hayden who worked circa 1845-1850. The large cent should also be easily identified as to die marriage due to the advanced die cracks through the stars.
