Description

Counterstamps

(lion) (W) (head) in box punches on an 1819 Matron Head large cent. Brunk-Unlisted, Rulau-Unlisted. Host coin Very Good.

These are the marks of Jacob Wood (1809-1850), a silversmith working in New York City from 1834 to 1850. He was in a partnership with William Gale and Jasper Ward Hughes as GALE, WOOD & HUGHES from 1836 to 1845 and then as WOOD & HUGHES from 1845 to his death in 1850. Their shop was initially located at 116 Fulton, and then 16 John Street. These marks were used to mark their silver products.
