Description

Counterstamps

J. Colton six times on an 1835 Matron Head large cent. Brunk-Unlisted, Rulau-Unlisted. Host coin Very Good.

This is most likely the stamp of Jacob Colton (1799-1883), who was a jeweler working in Longmeadow, MA and Hartford, CT. On the 1855 Longmeadow local census he was listed as a thimble and spectacle maker and as a manufacturing jeweler on the 1860 census. After 1848 he was in a partnership with Gilson D. Hollister in Hartford CT.
