Struck Copies of Colonial Coins and Related
"1787" (ca. 1869) Excelsior Copper. Indian / Eagle on Globe. Bolen Copy. Musante JAB-36, Kenney-7, W-14370. Copper. MS-66 BN (PCGS).
A virtually pristine example of the type, both sides are lustrous and frosty with dominant golden-copper patina. Intermingled powder blue highlights are also evident, as are remnants of original color in vivid reddish-orange around the peripheries. Boldly defined, and as smooth and inviting as the day it was struck. The dies for this type were prepared in 1869, Neil E. Musante providing a mintage of 40 copper impressions in his 2002 reference The Medallic Work of John Adams Bolen. This is the finest example that your cataloger (JLA) has seen in a 20-year professional numismatic career, and it is certainly among the very finest known.
