Struck Copies of Colonial Coins and Related
"1787" (ca. 1869) Excelsior Copper. Indian / Eagle on Globe. Bolen Copy. Musante JAB-36, Kenney-7, W-14380. Silver--Overstruck on an 1805 Draped Bust Quarter--MS-62 (NGC).
This intriguing and presumably unique overstrike is described by Q. David Bowers in his 2009 Whitman Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins : "One over an 1805 quarter, maintaining its reeded edge (ex Newcomer and Cruzan collections to Eastern collection [Bowers]; massive rim cud at upper right of reverse, probably fatal to the die; illustrated.)" Musante (2002) knew of only the silver piece overstruck on an 1821 quarter, also mentioned by Bowers, but of the reported mintage for this type of just two in silver, he states "at least one silver example was struck over an 1821 quarter." Is this the other silver example, meaning that both in this metallic composition are overstruck? Handsome pewter gray and golden-tan patina with ample remnants of the undertype, most notably around the peripheries on both sides, as well as in the center of the obverse. Smooth satin surfaces are temptingly close to Choice Mint State quality. An exciting coin, and a fleeting bidding opportunity for the specialist.
Ex Waldo C. Newcomer; Cruzan Collection; Q. David Bowers Collection. Plated in the 2009 Whitman colonial and early American coin encyclopedia by Q. David Bowers.
