Description

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 272-240 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 19 mm, 6.43 g, 5 h), struck under the magistrates Phi.. and Philenenos. ΦΙ / ΦΙΛΗΝΕ-ΝΟΣ Nude man, with long hair (and beard?) riding horse standing to right, holding bridle with both hands. Rev. ΤΑΡΑΣ Youthful Phalanthos, nude, riding dolphin to left, holding a tripod in his right hand and trident with his left; to right, filleted bucranion. HN III 1035. Vlasto 884 ff. An elegant and attractive coin. Nearly extremely fine.
