Description

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 272-240 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 20 mm, 6.54 g, 12 h), struck under the magistrate Philiskos. Laureate man, with drapery around his waist, riding horse standing to right, holding the reins in his left hand and raising his right in salute; below horse, ΦΙΛΙCΚΟC. Rev. ΤΑΡΑΣ Youthful Phalanthos, nude, riding dolphin to left, holding a kantharos in his right hand and trident with his left; below dolphin, tripod. HN III 1036. Vlasto 888. Attractive and with a very impressive obverse. Reverse very slightly off-center, otherwise, about extremely fine.
