Description

Gupta Dynasty, Chandragupta II (Vikramaditya) (375-415 CE), Gold Dinar, "Chhatra (Parasol)" type, Obv: the king standing, facing left, his left-hand rests on the hilt of the sword and sacrificing with his right hand into a fire altar on left field, an attendant stands behind him and holding the Chhatra (royal parasol), the attendant has left leg bent up, Brahmi legend "Kshitimavajitya (Sucharitairdiavam jayati) Vikramadityah" around the field, Rev: the goddess Lakshmi, nimbate, walking to the left, holding a diadem and a long-stemmed lotus, a lotus is seen behind the goddess, tamgha at the top left field, Brahmi legend "(Vikramadityah)" on the right field, 7.76g, 17.0mm, (Variant of Altekar, Bayana Hoard # Pl. XVI-5/TOTGE, S. Kumar # Class-I, Var. C, C2), almost complete details, sharply struck, choice extremely fine, Extremely Rare.

Note: It is a C Variety type from Class I coins as per S. Kumar's Gupta Catalogue. The Chhatra-type coins were innovations of Chandragupta II. The type was introduced probably with the idea of accentuating his Imperial status as the sole sovereign ruler (eka-chhatratva) in the country. It is a sharply struck coin with splendid characteristics and details.
