Description

Gupta Dynasty, Chandragupta II (Vikramaditya) (375-415 CE), Gold Dinar, "Chhatra (Parasol)" type, Broad Flan, Obv: the king standing facing left, nimbate, wearing a cap with pearl string, with his fist on the hilt of the sword he carries in his left hand and sacrificing over an altar on the left field, an attendant stands behind him and holding the Chhatra (royal parasol), Brahmi legend "(Maharajadhiraja) Shri Chandragupta" around the field, Rev: the goddess Lakshmi, nimbate, standing left on a wide lotus-shaped pedestal, holding a diadem in her right-hand, fingers are seen wide open and a long-stemmed lotus in her left-hand that is seen behind her, tamgha on the top left field, Brahmi legend "Vikramadityah" on the right field, dotted border around the field, 7.75g, 20.09mm, (Altekar, Bayana Hoard # Pl. XV- 5-6/TOTGE, S. Kumar # Class-II, Var. C), about extremely fine, Extremely Rare.

Note: It is a notable Class II Variety C type as per S. Kumar's Gupta Catalogue. The Chhatra-type coins were innovations of Chandragupta II. This type was introduced probably with the idea of emphasizing his Imperial status as the sole sovereign ruler (eka-chhatratva) in the country. This is one of the finest coins that has been offered in recent years that showcases minuscule details boldly and in high relief.
