Description

Gupta Dynasty, Kumaragupta I (Mahendraditya) (415-455 CE), Gold Dinar, "Reverse Archer & Vamardhaparyanka Posture" type, Obv: the king standing facing left, nimbate, holding a longbow in his left hand in the reverse position and an arrow in his right, a Garuda standard on the left field, Brahmi legend "Ku(mara)" to the right, Brahmi legend "Maharajadhi(raja Shri Kumaraguptah)" around the field, Rev: the goddess Lakshmi, nimbate, facing forward and seated in the Vamardhaparyanka posture on a lotus, holding a diadem in her right hand and a lotus in her left hand, whose stem is coming from inside the hand resting on her thigh, a tamgha on the left field, Brahmi legend "Sri Mahendra" on the right, a dotted border around the field, 7.70g, 17.19mm, (Altekar. Bayana Hoard # Pl. XIX- 14-15/TOTGE, S. Kumar # Class. II-Var. E), about very fine, Exceedingly Rare.

Note: The Goddess is seen gracefully seated in the Vamardhaparyanka posture on a lotus, a posture where the right leg is tucked inwards on the seat and the left leg is hanging down to touch the ground or rest on a support. The left hand is seen resting on the left thigh and holding the stalk of a blossoming lotus flower (padma) - a symbol of purity and fertility - beside the left shoulder. The combination of the Reverse Archer type of Kumaragupta with this posture for the Goddess and his Brahmi initials "KU" is rare. It is being offered for the first time in any auction.
