Description

INDIA, Pre-Mauyran (Gujarat). Saurashtra Janapada. 450-300 BC. 1/4 Karshapana (Silver, 13 mm, 0.80 g). Bull advancing left; around, ancillary symbols. Rev. Bull (?) advancing left; around, traces of undertype visible. P. Anne van't Haaff, Saurashtra Surasena Silver Punchmarked Coinage, Type 5. The usual traces of overstriking, otherwise, about very fine.

From a collection of coins from Central Asia.

The Saurashtra Janapada was located in the modern-day Junagadh district of Gujarat. Its punch-marked coins were reused several times, explaining why almost all of them are overstrikes.
