Description

INDIA, Pre-Mauyran (Ganges Valley). Surasena Janapada. 500-350 BC. 1/2 Karshapana (Silver, 13 mm, 1.60 g), circa 400-350 BC. Stylized fish to right; below, stylized lion to right. P. Anne van't Haaff, Saurashtra Surasena Silver Punchmarked Coinage, type 1.11. Very fine.

From a collection of coins from Central Asia.

The Surasena Janapada was mentioned in the great Hindu epic Ramayana. The ancient Greek writers also referred to the kingdom of Sourasenoi and mentioned its capital as Methora (Mathura).
