Description

Hupeh. Republic Yuan Shih-kai 20 Cents Year 9 (1920) AU Details (Cleaned) PCGS, Wuchang mint, KM-Y406, L&M-191, Kann-765, WS-0887, Wenchao-1058 (rarity 2 stars). With characters "Hu Peh" to either side of bust. A rather exceptional one-year provincial minor bearing the popular "Fat Man" portrait of Yuan Shih-kai, representing the sole Republican silver issue known to have been produced at the Wuchang mint. Despite its conditional modifier--referring to an old, comparatively non-distracting cleaning from long ago--it is notable that the type is notoriously difficult to procure above AU certification, with PCGS recording that they have certified only 13 in Mint State out of the 89 examples they have yet awarded straight-grades. Long-since retoned in an airy silver color, this is just the third occasion we have had to present the issue. From the Tony Ma Collection
