Description

Eastern European Medieval Arrowhead and Crossbow Bolt Collection. 9th-15th century A.D. A group of three arrowheads comprising: a square-section tanged crossbow bolt; an arrowhead with leaf-shaped head and round-section socket; an iron arrowhead with trapezoidal head and tapering, round-section tang. Cf. Vagalinsky, L. (ed.), Tsar Samuil (+1014) in battle for Bulgaria, Sofia, 2014, nos. 109, 111, 114, for the types of arrowheads; for the crossbow bolt see similar specimen in Vitlianov, S., ???????????????? ??????????, (Ancient Bulgarian armament), Sofia, 1996, pl.V, no.6, from Madara. 45 grams total, 8.4-10.5 cm long (3 1/4 - 4 1/4 in.) Ian Wilkinson collection, Nottinghamshire, UK, formed since 1985. Accompanied by three dealer's tickets with item codes. All three specimens are similar to the ones found in the Eastern Balkans, and probably came from the battlefields of the Eastern Roman Empire. The presence of a Western style quadrella can confirm the wide employment in the last Roman civil wars, or in the Balkan wars among Turks, Christian Latin and Christian Orthodox, of the feared Genoese crossbowmen, who also took part in the desperate and unsuccessful defence of the Byzantine capital in 1453 and 1461 A.D. [3, No Reserve]

Fair condition.
