Obv: Taras, nude and with both arms outstretched, astride dolphin left; scallop shell below, TAPAϟ (retrograde) downwards behind. Rev: wheel of four spokes.
Good Very Fine; test cut to obv., beautiful old cabinet tone.
Taras, the mythological founder and eponymous hero of the ancient city of Tarentum, frequently appeared on the city's coinage. Typically depicted riding a dolphin (as here), a reference to the legend in which a shipwrecked Taras was saved by a dolphin sent by Poseidon (his father), emphasising not only divine favour, but the importance of seafaring in Tarentum's history..
