"1799" (ca. 1800) Repub. Ameri. Medal. Second Obverse. Musante GW-62, Baker-69. Copper. AU-55 (PCGS).
32.9 mm. 299.5 grains. Dark brown with traces of verdigris in the protected recesses, but glossy otherwise. A follow-up to the 1796-dated issue with the obverse altered by Wyon to reflect George Washington's life and death, this being a memorial medal to his life. This type is scarcer than the other, particularly in high grade. Bronze examples are usually worn, whereas the bronzes of the dated variant are usually nicely preserved.
From the Richard August Collection.
