Description

1763 Peace of Paris Medal. Betts-444. Silver. AU-50 (PCGS).
41.6 mm. 476.9 grains. Plain edge. We (Stack's) sold this medal in January 2009 and have not offered another silver Betts-444 since. At the time, it was described: Lovely deep gray with attractive old toning, showing abundant blue and violet across the reverse in particular. Very attractive for the grade assigned despite some minor hairlines and scattered minor contact marks. The reverse legend PAX UBIQUE VICTRIX (Peace triumphs everywhere) reflects the global nature of the Seven Years' War, despite its humble beginning in a clearing in Pennsylvania. A scarce and desirable medal, struck officially at the Paris Mint. This Betts number is elusive in either format, and we've sold just two copper specimens in addition to this one since the 2006 Ford sale. Ford had two of these in silver, a lifetime accumulation.
From the Joe Foster Collection. Earlier ex Emile Bourgey, July 1971; John J. Ford, Jr.; our (Stack's) sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XIV, May 2006, lot 148; our (Stack's) Americana Sale of January 2009, lot 5522.

Estimate: $3000
