Description

"1720" (early 20th century) Founding of Louisbourg Medal. Betts-143. Bronze. AU Details--Altered Surfaces (PCGS).
41.5 mm. 617.2 grains. Edge marked (cornucopia) BRONZE, indicative of a 20th century Paris Mint production. A perfectly original medal with no post striking alterations. Choice and even chocolate brown with the matte finish typical of Paris Mint issues of the era and an applied antiqued finish to imbue the medal with a distinctive, watery look. While the grading services have not seen many medals made in this way (we haven't either), this medal is a gem with no substantial flaws.
From the Joe Foster Collection. Earlier from Charles Moore Numismatic Auctions' TOREX sale, February 2009, lot 1453.

Estimate: $250
