1677 Tobago Taken by Assault Medal. Betts-59. Bronze. MS-63 BN (PCGS).
41.1 mm. 526.4 grains. Plain edge. Lively hints of mint color frame glossy and lustrous medium brown surfaces. A handsome example of this impressively designed medal, depicting the star fort on Tobago under siege. The fields are toned and lightly reflective, with some very subtle hairlines that are hard to find even with a glass. Adams gathered six different obverse dies on this Betts number, all originally discerned and assembled by Ted Craige. Ford found seven examples, though several were from the same obverse die.
From the Joe Foster Collection. Earlier ex Ted L. Craige Collection; John W. Adams Collection; Heritage's sale of January 2013, lot 3615.
