1677 Dutch Fleet Burned and French Colony at Tobago Preserved Jeton. Betts-58. Brass. AU Details--Cleaned (PCGS).
25.7 mm. 69.2 grains. Glossy dark golden-olive surfaces are lustrous and attractive, far more natural in appearance than the PCGS descriptor may indicate despite some areas of localized hairlines. This specimen was discussed in Robert Levinson's May-June 2013 MCA Advisor y article entitled "Two Unpublished Betts Medal Varieties in the 'Dutch Fleet Burned' Jetons of 1677." Considering how many of these jetons were minted, it is unsurprising several dies were used, but such research remains in its pioneering stages.
From the Joe Foster Collection. Earlier ex Maison Platt, October 1973; John J. Ford, Jr.; our (Stack's) sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XIII, January 2006, lot 744.
