Description

1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 33.27-r.4, W-3755. Rarity-5+. Draped Bust Left. VF-35 (PCGS).
156.4 grains. Dark olive brown with somewhat lighter brown highlights. Fairly glossy on the obverse with some minor surface debris, while the reverse has patches of duller oxidation around the upper half. A few minor nicks and faint abrasions, but no serious marks or natural flaws catch the eye. Struck off center by perhaps 10%, with good detail on the obverse and an arc of unstruck metal toward 2 o'clock. Shifted to the upper left on the reverse and a bit less well defined on this side, but with a full date. Painted die variety in the obverse fields, likely by William Wallace Hays.
PCGS# 686383.
From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier ex William Wallace Hays; Charles Steigerwalt, 1903; Hillyer C. Ryder; F.C.C. Boyd; John J. Ford, Jr.; our (Stack's) sale of June 1994, lot 124; Early American Numismatics' sale of March 1995, lot 101; Jim LaSarre, via John Agre and Dave Wnuck (Coin Rarities Online), June 2006.
