1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 33.26-W.5, W-3745. Rarity-7+. Draped Bust Left. Fine Details--Scratched (PCGS).
115.0 grains. Rough with considerable granularity and exhibiting old abrasions and scratches that largely come to light only under closer study. Weak at the upper reverse but most remaining details are well outlined and the legends are almost complete save for the E of ET LIB. There is certainly enough visible to make a certain attribution as the very rare 33.26-W.5. As we noted in our sale of Syd's primary coin, just four examples are known of this variety. With this offering we will have sold all three of the privately owned ones. The fourth resides in the ANS. Of the three in private hands, this is probably the second best. The nicest was Syd's primary coin, and the other was the Collection SLT coin which was a bit sharper in detail but heavily encrusted with corrosion and arguably much less satisfying in hand.
PCGS# 917727.
From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier ex Michael Ringo, September 1992; our (Stack's) sale of the George C. Perkins Collection, January 2000, lot 402.
