Description

1787 Fugio Cent. Pointed Rays. Newman 9-S, W-6765. Rarity-6. STATES UNITED, 4 Cinquefoils. Good-4 (PCGS).
144.0 grains. Although well worn, all major design elements are appreciable, if not relatively bold, and the Newman number is easily confirmed. Obverse off center to 3 o'clock with the right border into the tops of the date digits, rings at lower right reverse flush with the border. Latter side with minor flan flaws at upper right and before 6 o'clock, reverse with several smaller striations scattered about. Close inspection with a loupe reveals some faint hairlines and a touch of glossiness to the texture, but the surfaces have a pleasingly original appearance in blended medium brown and antique gold. The 9-S die pairing was not known to Newman in his original 1949 article on the "Varieties of the Fugio Cent," and though it has dropped in rarity from R-7+ in the early 1980s to a solid R-6 today, it is difficult to find an example at any grade level, much less a decent one. There are only nine appearances of seven different coins in our archives for the last 20 or so years, most of which were VF-20 or less. The smooth but unevenly worn VG-8 coin from the Star of Texas Collection still mustered a solid $1,200 auction result. We expect the present offering from the Syd Martin Collection, ranked #11 in the census published in the 2016 edition of Rob Retz's Fugio Copper Notes, will perform similarly well at its assigned grade level.
PCGS# 878083. NGC ID: 2B8E.
From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier ex Donald Scarinci Collection, November 2010.
