Description

1787 Fugio Cent. Pointed Rays. Newman 10-G, W-6700. Rarity-5. UNITED STATES, 1/Horizontal 1. EF Details--Cleaned (PCGS).
152.3 grains. An uncommonly survivor of this significant and eagerly sought die pairing, most design elements actually remain nearly full from a well-centered and universally crisp strike. Cleaned at one time with light hairlining and underlying glossy pinkish-orange color, the surfaces have retoned quite nicely in medium brown. There is some dark surface scale here and there around the peripheries, most notably at lower and left reverse. Excluding the unique Newman 10-OO, this is the more challenging of two scarce die varieties using the 1/Horizontal 1 obverse, and these two die pairs alone comprise two major Guide Book varieties, as one has a UNITED STATES reverse and the other a STATES UNITED. Newman 10-G, the UNITED STATES reverse version offered here, is the slightly scarcer and considerably more conditionally challenging of the two pairings. Here is a nice opportunity for advanced Fugio collectors that is sure to see spirited bidding.
PCGS# 878085. NGC ID: 2B8H.
From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier ex Christopher B. Young, July 2004.
