The Legendary Rincon 8 Reales from Lima
PERU. 8 Reales, ND (1568-70)-P R. Lima Mint, Assayer Alonso de Rincon (R). Philip II. PCGS Genuine--Salt Water Damage, VF Details.
KM-13; Cal-651; Sellschopp-1. Weight: 25.14 gms. Few issues in all of Spanish colonial coinage command as much interest and desire as this VERY RARE early 8 Reales from the Lima mint. This is because the coin is the very first "Dollar"-sized issue struck in South America, and, since the Carlos & Johanna 8 Reales of Mexico never entered circulation, is in fact the first circulating "Dollar" of the New World. This example is well-centered on both sides, giving it complete outer legends with few areas of weakness (decidedly more legible than the Luis R. Ponte example graded NGC AU Details sold by Sedwick in May 2024, which realized a $72,500 hammer price). The central devices are fully struck up with a clear mintmark, denomination, and assayer showing only moderate wear. As noted, the surfaces exhibit the light porosity associated with saltwater submersion, but this drawback does little to impair the coin's historical importance and tremendous collectability. We anticipate competitive bidding for this numismatic treasure.
