Plated in Mazard and T&T
FRANCE. Consulate. Bimetallic Copper & Silver Franc Essai (Pattern), Year 12-A (1803/4). Paris Mint. Napoléon as First Consul. PCGS MS-62.
Maz-572 (R5; this coin illustrated); cf. Gad-442 (for regular issue); T&T-1026.2.X (this coin cited & illustrated). Reeded edge. By P.-J. Tiolier. Weight: 3.05 gms. An EXCEPTIONAL RARITY in which an outer ring of copper was used with an inner center of silver, this intriguing bimetallic issue has had its status questioned by the authors of T&T on account of an inability to see the Kraft example in a format other than through an over-sixty-year-old catalog image. This specimen is the Kraft example, and certainly provides no evidence of later manufacture or a fanciful veneer in order to accomplish the bimetallic appearance. A monumental and extremely impressive offering.
