FRANCE. Constitution. Tin Reverse Cliché or Trial for Écu de 6 Livres, Year 2/1791. Paris Mint. Louis XVI. PCGS MS-62.
cf. Maz-62 (artist's initial "D" on groundline to left); cf. Gad-47.(e) (same); cf. Ciani-2229 & 2229A (for full strikes in silver & copper). By J.-P. Droz. Dimensions: 41.5mm x 44.5mm. Struck on a rather irregular planchet, this intriguing and EXTREMELY RARE trial strike features some subtle differences from Droz's final product, with Margolis noting that there is "...no D on ground, which reaches rim on both left and right; rear wing tip of Genius is better defined, rim of fleurs de lis has an outer circumferential line, and there is an additional circumferential engraver's line beyond the rim. "
From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Maison Platt in Paris on 1 March 1982). Ex: Droz Family Collection (Maison Platt - 3/1982) Lot # 11.
