Description

FRANCE. Kingdom. Duo of Steel Dies for Obverse & Reverse of Écu de Calonne (2 Pieces), 1786-A. Paris Mint. ESSENTIALLY AS MADE.
cf. Ciani-2206 (for resulting striking); cf. Guilloteau-94 (same). Featuring J.-P. Droz's classic design for the Écu pattern, this pairing stands out in particular in that the obverse lacks the laureate crown on the king--a much RARER aspect. An incredible offering, especially given the presence of the EXCEPTIONALLY RARE silver striking in this collection. Both dies capture the artistic flair of Droz in its entirety, with the fields perfectly polished for their clear prior use for specimen production. 1) Obverse--Diameter: 70mm; Thickness: 43mm. 2) Reverse--Diameter: 83mm; Thickness: 39mm.
From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Maison Platt in Paris on 1 March 1982). Ex: Droz Family Collection (Maison Platt - 3/1982) Lots # 6 & 7.

Estimate: $1500.00- $3000.00
