Incredibly rare Banco Comercial Proof
VENEZUELA. Lot of (2). Banco Comercial. 1000 Bolívares, ND (ca. 1883). P-S170p. Front & Back Proofs. PMG About Uncirculated 55 NET & Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.
A denomination that was lacking in the important Rosenman collection, this is the first 1000 Bolivares of the Banco Comercial in Caracas we have had the pleasure to offer. Predecessor to the Banco de Venezuela, the bank was founded in March of 1883 and opened for business later that year with 3,200,000 Bolivares in capital. Its first series of banknotes was printed by the American Bank Note Company. Of this denomination a mere 500 notes were printed for circulation (inexplicably numbered 1801 to 2300), and to the best of our knowledge, none are known.
