URUGUAY. Lot of (2). Departamento de Emision del Banco de la Republica Oriental. 500 Pesos, 1966. P-Unlisted. Front & Back Printer's Designs. PMG Superb Gem Uncirculated 67 EPQ.
Unissued pair of 500 peso front and back printer designs without selvage. Made for "El Departamento de Emision del Banco de la Republica Oriental Del Uruguay" but eventually the Banco Central del Uruguay, who started issuing banknotes in 1966, would be the bank using this design. The United States Banknote Corporation printed the trial pieces in this lot in a effort to secure a contract for the 1966 series but Thomas de la Rue ended up being the printer of various denominations for the Banco Central in 1966 instead. Since other trial pieces of this design were produced for the Banco Central de la Republica Oriental del Uruguay, which was deemed too similar to the name of a commercial bank that operated in Uruguay at the time, it is possible that the bank name had not yet been decided upon.
