Description

1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 31.1-gg.1, W-3205. Rarity-3. Draped Bust Left, ETLIR. AU-58 (PCGS).

132.5 grains. Miller number in white collector ink in left obverse field. Mottled golden-brown with some areas darker. Obverse and reverse quite rough in appearance with considerable loss of detail on the latter side due to retention of original planchet texture. Light flan flaws are scattered about and find greatest expression near the upper borders, engaging the top of the effigy's head, and also the seated figure's head. Similar in strike, planchet quality and preservation to the Syd Martin coin, which was also certified AU-58 by PCGS and summed up with the comment "High Condition Census seems a safe pronouncement" when sold as lot 8304 in our August 2023 Global Showcase Auction.

PCGS# 685384. NGC ID: 2B36.

Ex Charles Steigerwalt; William Wallace Hays; Hillyer C. Ryder; F.C.C. Boyd; John J. Ford, Jr.; our (Stack's) sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part IX, May 2005, lot 336.

Estimate: $1500
