1863 Washington Portrait / HORRORS OF WAR BLESSINGS OF PEACE. Fuld-120/256 fo, Musante GW-578, Baker-475. Rarity-9. Silver. Reeded Edge. Overstruck on an 1856 Small Date Liberty Seated Dime. MS-64 (NGC).
19 mm. Richly and originally toned surfaces are dressed in a blend of steel and sandy-gray with blushes of golden-russet also evident in and around the centers. The most striking (no pun intended) features of this specimen are the sharp denomination ONE DIME and shield from the undertype in the middle of the token's obverse and reverse, respectively. Many other portions of the dime design are also discernible, including the date at the upper right reverse border of the token - it is readily attributable as the Small Date logotype of the dime issue. While some elements of the token's design are obscured by the undertype, this is easily offset by the profound appearance that the latter's remnants make on the eye. Really a stunning example, and of further desirability due to the impressive numismatic provenance.
