MACEDON. Kingdom of Macedon. Alexander III (the Great), 336-323 B.C. AR Tetradrachm (17.19 gms), Uncertain mint, likely Pella or Amphipolis, ca. 332-323 B.C., or slightly thereafter. NGC AU★, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 5/5.
Pr-Unlisted. Likely lifetime issue. Obverse: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin; Reverse: Zeus seated left on throne, holding eagle and scepter; in left field, trident head upward. Seemingly unlisted in Price, this interesting issue parallels some others from both Pella and Amphipolis from the lifetime of Alexander, pointing to an attribution there. The strike is well centered and well executed, and the toning has a slight golden nature around the devices, indicative of the star designation for great eye appeal.
