MACEDON. Kingdom of Macedon. Alexander III (the Great), 336-323 B.C. AV Distater (17.18 gms), Amphipolis Mint, ca. 325-323/2 B.C. NGC EF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 3/5. Fine Style. Marks, Edge Marks.
Pr-163. Probable lifetime issue. Obverse: Helmeted head of Athena right; Reverse: Nike standing left, holding wreath and cradling stylis; thunderbolt in left field. An always-popular and RARE issue on account of its size ( issued to the weight that was twice the size of the much more commonly-encountered gold denomination ), this specimen offers solid centering of strike upon each side. Some scattered marks as noted are observed--a fairly ubiquitous aspect as many found their way into jewelry as they survived from antiquity.
