1880-S Liberty Head Half Eagle. MS-64 (PCGS).
Exceptionally smooth and well preserved surfaces set this coin apart from the vast majority of 1880-S half eagles extant. Both sides are close to full Gem Mint State quality, in fact, and they are enhanced by a lovely blend of frosty luster and vivid golden-apricot color. The 1880-S is the first San Francisco Mint half eagle issue with a mintage of more than 1 million coins (1,348,900 pieces), and it is popular for type purposes in circulated and lower Mint State grades. At the present level this issue emerges as a surprise condition rarity and this beautiful MS-64 offers outstanding value for the astute bidder.
