Description

1712-AA 30 Deniers, or Mousquetaire. Metz Mint. Vlack-10. Rarity-3. AU-53 (PCGS). CAC.
Mostly light silver-gray with intermingled olive highlights, a swirl of variegated reddish-russet at the lower right reverse border is associated with some ancient surface scale. Finely granular but bold to sharp everywhere, that is, except the soft peripheries at lower right obverse, upper and lower reverse. This piece is a case study in the difficulty in finding choice billon: a coin might offer superb sharpness and even eye appeal (as here), but finding those characteristics alongside a complete strike and smooth surfaces is a rare juxtaposition. This example is ideally centered and generally problem free, with just the aforementioned surface scale ranking as a notable detraction.
PCGS# 158645.

Estimate: $1000
