1783 Nova Constellatio Copper. Crosby 2-B, W-1865. Rarity-2. CONSTELLATIO, Pointed Rays, Small U.S. MS-63 BN (NGC).
A lovely example with hard, frosty surfaces that are smooth in the absence of troublesome marks. There are also no worrisome flan flaws, otherwise autumn and rose-brown surfaces with only a few swirls of deeper steel-olive color out of the way at the borders. The obverse is a bit tight to the top, reverse with little denticulation, but otherwise we note impressively bold detail throughout the design. The best of these is probably the Newman coin, last seen in our 2015 ANA sale as NGC MS-66 BN. Other than that, we haven't offered a comparable specimen since the Ford sale almost 20 years ago. The Dittmer coin (NGC MS-65 BN) was exceptional; it brought $66,000 in May 2022. The handful of specimens similar to this one round out a potential Condition Census for the 1783 Crosby 2-B dies.
