1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 38-a, W-5180. Rarity-5. Pony Head. Fine-15 (PCGS).
141.9 grains. Choice and glossy medium brown with excellent surfaces. Well centered and nicely detailed for the grade. A little batch of scratches crosses CAE atop the obverse to the horsehead and some natural striations are seen at REA. On the reverse, a couple old scratches are seen above BU of PLURIBUS and there are some marks on the rim above NU of UNUM. This is an unusually pretty specimen for this Maris number. We sold the finest known example from these dies in our November 2019 EPU sale. Graded EF-40 (PCGS), it brought $5,760. In that catalog, we noted how tough these are nice. It remains the case that anything better than Fine is probably Condition Census and a nice Fine is a great specimen of the variety too.
PCGS# 766287.
