Description

CANADA. Dominion of Canada. 4 Dollars, 1882. DC-10. PMG Very Fine 30.
Printed by BABN. Printed signature of J.M. Courtney at right. Penned signature at left. A sensational new discovery for this wildly popular type. This iconic 4 Dollar was the first of its denomination to be printed by the Dominion Government, as issuance of notes less than 5 Dollar by chartered banks was prohibited after 1880. Just 1.2 million of these were produced, and they remain sought after by collectors and are seldom seen in grades Very Fine or higher. Central portrait vignette of Marquis de Lorne (4th Governor General of Canada, John Campbell, 9th Duke of Argyll). Great Seal of Canada at right in a red-orange color. At left, ornate four counter in olive ink. Found on the reverse is "Dominion of Canada" in front of a large "4" at center, with counters in each corner. Typical beautiful lathe work, as found on other notes of the era compliments of the British American Bank Note Company in a dark forest green color. This is the finest example of this popular denomination that we can recall handling publicly, and it is sure to command a premium. Bid accordingly, as notes of this caliber seldom appear on the market. PMG Pop 2/2 Finer.

Estimate: $10000.00- $15000.00
