Description

1833 Matron Head Cent. N-5. Rarity-1. MS-62 BN (PCGS).
A satiny, generally dark steel-brown cent with some faded down mint rose color around the obverse periphery and, especially, over the lower right third of the reverse. Otherwise smooth in hand, provenance considerations benefit from a thin, light graze in the left obverse field between star 3 and the tip of Liberty's nose. Sharply struck earlier die state (Noyes C/B) with slightly reflective fields and all the fine die lines crisp, bold repunching to the digit 8 in the date, traces of misplaced 8 in the denticles below the primary digit. The reverse is rotated 35 degrees clockwise from normal coin alignment.
PCGS# 37030. NGC ID: 225P.
From Kagin's sale of the Philip Van Cleave Collection, January 1986, lot 4334; Ira & Larry Goldberg's sale of the Dan Holmes Collection, Part II, May-June 2010 Pre-Long Beach Auction, lot 381.

Estimate: $1000
