1817/3 Capped Bust Half Dollar. O-101a. Rarity-1. AU-58 (PCGS).
A particularly attractive example of this popular overdate variety in the Capped Bust half dollar series, direct lighting allows the best appreciation of vivid multicolored toning. Shades of reddish-gold, cobalt blue and medium rose are dominant, while at indirect viewing angles the appearance is largely a blend of silver-gray and steel-olive. The strike is well centered and generally sharp, the surfaces retaining plenty of lively satin luster. This die pairing is seldom found this well preserved, the present example certain to amuse any specialist that secures it with its near-comical overdate feature and glorious surface quality. An outstanding selection to represent this sought after variety with one of the boldest overdates in the Capped Bust half dollar series.
